As sessões de trabalho tiveram início, conforme programado, às 10H00 de dia 20 de Maio no auditório Víctor de Sá.
A sessão de abertura contou com a participação do Professor Doutor Mário Moutinho que proferiu algumas palavras sobre o evento dando particular ênfase à importância do debate sobre o tema do seminário e, especialmente, à necessária sensibilização dos estudantes para esta matéria.

A abordagem ao tema em foco neste seminário foi iniciada com a conferência do Professor Jacinto Rodrigues (FAUP) a partir de uma perspectiva globalizante que teve como pano de fundo a questão da Ecologia Urbana e a sensibilização da assistência para a necessidade de reflectir sobre o imperativo de estabelecer uma nova ordem global fundamentada na sustentabilidade.

A perspectiva de Jacinto Rodrigues observou a incapacidade de progredir tendo como base o actual modelo social e cultural, Americano e Europeu, e a urgência de transformar as mentalidades no sentido de encontrar novos meios que permitam fazer face à situação de ruptura iminente - crise planetária - de que a actual crise económica é apenas uma primeira expressão.

Nur Çaglar abordou o tema da nova identidade arquitectónica a partir da apresentação de uma diversidade de obras representativas da produção arquitectónica, recente, em Ankara e Istambul, nomeadamente a proposta urbana de Zaha Hadid para o centro da cidade de Istambul - Kartal Plan.

As principais questões levantadas pela Professora Nur Çaglar prenderam-se com a relação, ou com a ausência dela, destas obras recentes com a identidade local e com as actuais questões relacionadas com as linguagens arquitectónicas e as suas implicações na leitura e compreensão das tipologias edificatórias tradicionais.

Assumindo, como se tratando de uma realidade, as evidentes mudanças no domínio da aqrquitectura, a conclusão da sua apresentação centrou-se no papel do arquitecto e no questionar das suas competências, neste mundo em transformação.

A exposição da Professora Ana Paula Rainha fundamentou-se no valor simbólico do objecto arquitectónico e na sua relação identitária com os sítios e com o homem. A identidade como referência e contributo para o estabelecimento da memória colectiva, constituiu, igualmente, uma questão fundamental da sua apresentação. Como elementos de reflexão, foram apresentados excertos das descrições das Cidades Invisíveis, de Italo Calvino, e a obra cinematográica de Giuseppe Tornatore, Cinema Paradiso.

Towards a New Architectural Identity

reflections on the architectural fabric in the age of globalization

O actual cenário da arquitectura contemporânea é hoje assinalado por uma profusão de obras de arquitectura caracterizadas por linguagens internacionalistas que apelam a uma cultura marcada pelos valores da globalização e por uma ruptura inquestionável com os valores e com as estéticas nacionais e regionais que são, ou eram, expressão da cultura dos lugares.

Na plenitude de um momento de transição de paradigmas, a arquitectura expressa-se hoje como veículo de uma cultura dominada pelas novas tecnologias (da concepção, à construção e à utilização), pelo consumo, pela imagem e pelo culto e multiplicação dos objectos e, naturalmente, pelas naturais convulsões e transformações sociais que daí têm resultado.

Nestas circunstâncias, faz sentido debater a actual identidade dos objectos arquitectónicos. Exemplos como o Museu Guggenheim, em Bilbao, ou o edifício da Casa da Música, no Porto, constituem expressões de uma nova ordem global, onde a arquitectura também se enquadra, e onde se permitem questionar os valores e os princípios que dão suporte a esta nova tendência e à definição de uma nova identidade. Tradition or Contradition: from theory to practise

It is thruth that the new thecnologies generate new forms and new concepts, wich can turn ,or not, into new thories. But reflecting about identity, or more, about a new identity, proceeding from globalization,new thecnologies themselves and even from new ways of conception (computers programms, from the simplest to the more sophisticated one), can we really say that there is a rupture in the tradicional concept of identity? Are we in the presence of a new paradigma of understanding architecture, or simply we are just in the same position like observers and what has to be revisited is the old question“ then, what is , what means, what happened to identity in architecture?

The Bilbao Effect

Formerly noted for steel mills and shipyards, the Basque city is now home to sleek hotels, designer boutiques and the kind of swank restaurants once found only in Madrid or Barcelona. Today, Bilbao attracts tourists from around the globe, 80 percent of whom say they came explicitly for the Guggenheim. Since Frank Gehry's architectural masterpiece was finished, more than 6 million visitors have seen it. And although today's crowds are smaller than in the early days, on a recent Thursday afternoon in July, lines still snaked outside the door. In 2001, the Financial Times estimated that the museum had generated 500 million in economic activity for the region during its first three years, plus 100 million in taxes. Even in 2002 -- the worst year in memory for international tourism -- Guggenheim patrons contributed some 160 million to the local economy. It's called the Bilbao Effect, and civic leaders from Sarasota to Sacramento are hoping it can happen to them. They reason that if top-flight architecture can draw free-spending throngs to the industrialized reaches of northern Spain, maybe it can do the same for other benighted burgs.

Sovereign Architecture: The Enigma of Power in the Age of Globalization

Such trend is being marketed through the architecture of iconic buildings. The demand for iconic architecture today proves that modernity in general and the Industrial and French revolutions as the important hinges of modernity, did not alter the general trend of architecture in its history, which is the search for iconic buildings that prove the cultural and technological accomplishments of modern nations. Charles Jencks comments that “the iconic building as a genre concerned mostly with its own iconicity is now the foremost category of architecture in the world.” Hence the important question that should be asked in this age of globalization is: why is it that iconic architecture still is considered a source of national pride even when it is part of private investment and represents a trend towards more of a global culture?"
